Ita Serie A Matchdays 07/08

The scudetto kicks off this weekend - with more than a few interesting encounters.

Saturday 25th August

Lazio 2 – 2 Torino
In the first match of the new Serie A season, Lazio were held to a 2-2 draw by Torino at the Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus 5 – 1 Livorno
With just a David Trezeguet goal to show for the first half, the game exploded into life towards the end of the second. Iaquinta notched a brace on his debut and Trezeguet completed his hat-trick to help Juventus pick up a stunning 5-1 win over Livorno...

Sunday 26th August

Fiorentina 3– 1Empoli
The Tuscan derby is definitely one of the most anticipated matches this weekend, with the two sides each spoiling for a win against their rivals. Both squads did very well last year and their fans expect the same from them this season, in particular those of Fiorentina.

Genoa 0 – 3 Milan
A goal from Massimo Ambrosini and two from Kaka saw Milan run out 3-0 winners over a brave Genoa side. The Rossoneri were put under tremendous pressure in the second half, but defended solidly to make it a great start to the season...

Inter 1 – 1 Udinese
The reigning Italian champions kick-off their campaign with a difficult home game against an Udinese side just itching to surprise everyone.

Napoli 0 – 2 Cagliari
The Partenopei mark their return to Serie A with a home match against a weakened Cagliari side, who lost Suazo to Inter this summer. This is the perfect opportunity for the Azzurri to kick-off their campaign with a bang and prove that they are back in Serie A to stay.

Parma 2 – 2 Catania
Two teams which battled till the last matchday for the survival in Serie A last season square off here. The Gialloblu will be hoping to avoid the lower positions in the standings this year following some good purchases during the transfer market, whereas the Rossoblu do not seem equipped well enough to remain in the topflight.

Reggina 1 – 1 Atalanta
Miracles only happen once in a lifetime, and this will probably be the case of Reggina. The Amaranti incredibly enough managed to overcome an 11 point deficit at the start of last season and survive in the last matchday of Serie A.

Siena 1 – 2 Sampdoria
Siena have no big aspirations, with survival their main objective. Not an easy one by all means, but can surely repeat the good early part of last season that saw them pull away from the relegation dogfight.

Palermo 0 – 2 Roma
The first big match of the season, and a game which could go either way, especially if Roma does not perform at its best. Palermo will have Amauri back to spearhead the attacking line in what is a major boost for the Rosanero.

Serie A Wrap up`s.

Saturday September 1st

Empoli 0 - 2 Inter
Inter managed to get their season on track courtesy of a 2-0 victory away to Empoli.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the key figure for the defending champions with a goal in each half, while Francesco Toldo - who was deputising for the suspended Julio Cesar - also did his part in securing the three points.

In a thoroughly exciting afternoon of Serie A football, the second matchday of the season offered plenty of goals as Palermo and Napoli obtained big wins away from home while Juventus and Roma go top of the league after winning again today.

Sunday 2nd September

Atalanta 2 – 0 Parma
Atalanta got a straightforward home win over Parma, as Zampagna converted a penalty in the 21st minute, before Carrozzieri doubled the score in the 65th minute with header from a set piece.

Cagliari 2 – 3 Juventus

Juventus obtained a last-minute victory at Cagliari after twice allowing the home side to come back from the spot. Trezeguet opened the score early in the second half (54'), but Foggia equalised instantly as he converted a controversial penalty (56'). Del Piero then gave Juve back the lead in the 77th minute, but they were pegged back again by another penalty in he 81st minute. After both sides were reduced to 10 men following Zebina and Del Grosso's dismissals, Chiellini scored the winner in the 90th minute.

Catania 0 – 0 Genoa
Finished goalless.

Livorno 2 – 4 Palermo
Palermo played a terrific first half in Livorno as they stormed to a 4-0 lead with goals by Rinaudo (9'), Miccoli (22', 37'), and Amauri (41'). In the second half there was little Livorno could do, but they did manage two consolation goals through Rossini (54') and Grandoni (74').

Roma 3 – 0 Siena
The Giallorossi continued their positive start to the season with a comprehensive win over Siena. Aquilani opened the score with a great goal in the 14th minute, before Giuly (82') and Totti (89') closed the match with two late goals. They now go top of the table with Juve as they both have 6 points.

Torino 2 – 2 Reggina
An entertaining match in Turin, which saw the debut of Alvaro Recoba in a Torino shirt, finished in a 2-2 draw between Torino and Reggina. Amoruso opened the score on the half hour mark (31') for Reggina, before Rosina equalised just before the break. The home side took the lead through Ventola in the second half (59'), but in the 90th minute Cozza broke the home side's hearts.

Udinese 0 – 5 Napoli
After last week's home loss to Cagliari, Napoli bounced back in impressive style, to say the least, as they romped to a 5-0 win at Udinese. In the first half Zalayeta (16') and Domizzi (41') gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, and in the second Lavezzi (65'), Zalayeta again (71'), and ex-Udinese player Sosa (82') made it a humiliating afternoon for the Friulani.

Sampdoria 0 - 0 Lazio
Sampdoria and Lazio cancelled each other out at the Stadio Marassi.
In the end, this hard-fought encounter ended goalless, which leaves Sampdoria with 4 points after two matches, while Lazio have 2.

Milan – Fiorentina
Adrian Mutu came good on his promise late last week, his 56th minute strike cancelling out Kaka's first half penalty and earning Fiorentina a draw at the San Siro.
Milan failed to win all three points tonight against Fiorentina, despite dominating for the entire first half.
The Viola will be happy with the point won, but the most important thing is that they proved that they can compete with all the big guns in Serie A this season.

Serie A Wrap up`s

Saturday 15th September.

Siena 1-1 AC Milan

A first-half strike from Massimo Maccarone was something Carlo Ancelotti's boys failed to recover from, and only an injury time strike from Alessandro Nesta rescued them from what would have been utter humiliation.
With Ronaldo injured, goals were always going to be a concern for AC Milan, and the absence of Kaka and Pirlo meant that chances were also not as abundant as they could have been.
In the end, Siena showed more determination, and Carlo Ancelotti was found guilty of looking at the Champions League clash a little too early. Massimo Maccorone was the star of the show.

Lazio 0-0 Empoli
Saturday evening at the Stadio Olimpico saw Lazio and Empoli play to a 0-0 stalemate. This result is more disappointing for Lazio as they have now gained only 2 points from their first two home matches.

Sunday 16th September

Fiorentina 2 - 2 Atalanta
Fiorentina twice surrendered a lead to a tenacious ten-man Atalanta side at the Artemio Franchi, the nerazzurri grabbing a well-deserved point away from home.

Genoa 1 – 1 Livorno
Genoa and Livorno squared off at the Luigi Ferraris in a match that many saw as a premature relegation decider. Appropriately enough, it ended in a stalemate.

Inter 2 – 0 Catania

n the first half of the match, Catania were overwhelmed by the Milanese giants who created a flurry of chances in the first half an hour.Inter started to struggle early in the second half as they once again seemed tired, and it looked like it might be another tricky afternoon as they could not find a second goal. The result leaves Inter second in the league

Juventus 0 – 1 Udinese

Udinese shocked the world of calcio with a win over Juventus in Turin, the 'smaller' nerazzurri pulling off a surprisingly adept performance to stun the hosts.Having managed a draw at Inter on day one, Udinese duly lost 5-0 at home to Napoli in day two... and now this. It just goes to show that even the safest results can't quite be predicted in Serie A.

Napoli 1 – 0 Sampdoria

Goals from Marcelo Zalayeta and Marek Hamsik power Napoli to their second consecutive victory.
Napoli gave their home fans something to cheer about as they outclassed Sampdoria at the Stadio Sao Paulo for their second successive victory.

Palermo 1 – 1 Torino
Palermo welcomed Torino to Sicily for one of the afternoon's more intriguing encounters, the rosanero needing to settle for a point against their northern counterparts.
They seemed to be en route to a much-needed win when Simplicio got on the end of a good team move involving Diana and Amauri to open the scoring after just four minutes, but Torino fought back over the course of the game.

Reggina 0 - 2 Roma

Second half goals from Juan and Francesco Totti saw Roma pick up their third consecutive win of the season, which means that they are now alone at the top of the table. Luciano Spalletti's boys battled past a tricky first half, and then scored twice in the second to move to nine points from three games.

Parma 1 – 1 Cagliari
Parma and Cagliari ended up drawing 1-1 in a scrappy battle between two sides that, on this evidence, are bound to be fighting against relegation all the way through to the very end of the season.

Serie A Wrap Up`s:

Saturday 22nd September

Udinese 2 – 0 Reggina

A stunning performance from Azzurri hero Antonio Di Natale helped Udinese to a comfortable home victory over Reggina. He scored both goals in a 2-0 victory.

Milan 1 – 1 Parma

Defending European Champions AC Milan continued their poor run of results domestically as they drew 1-1 at home against Parma due to a 73rd minute strike from Andrea Pisanu. This was a match that for long stretches was dominated by Milan, but in the end they seemed content to hang on to their 1-0 lead, and paid for it.

Sunday 23rd September

Atalanta 2 - 1 Lazio
Atalanta shocked Lazio at the Atleti Azzuri d'Italia, a late equaliser seeming set to spare the Romans' blushes until a last-gasp winner sealed the points after an exciting and balanced fixture.

Cagliari 0 - 1 Palermo
Cagliari's woes continued following a close-fought but ultimately futile home battle with Palermo, the visitors heading back to Sicily with all three points.

Catania 0 – 1 Fiorentina
Fiorentina traveled to the southern island to face a Catania side still without a win, the visitors expecting victory. They got it.In this sense it was a deserved victory for the Firenze men, but it might have been so different had visiting goalkeeper Frey been off-form. He put in a great shift, a characteristic wonder-stop from a Mascara effort late on summing up his contribution.

Empoli 0 – 0 Napoli
Empoli were underdogs going into their home tie with Napoli, but managed a credible draw after what was a rather stuffy and boring fixture.
In a physical encounter, neither team really deserved the win, although Empoli narrowly had the best of the chances, none of which they could convert.

Livorno 2 - 2 Inter

IInter hit the self-destruct button several times again in Livorno, going down after a minute against their bottom-of-the-table hosts, and eventually scrapping a 2-2 draw after Maicon was sent off late in the second half for a silly kick at Erjon Bogdani..

Roma 2 – 2 Juventus

Roma faced Juventus in the historic clash of the titans, the hosts almost cementing their Serie A dominance only to be pegged back to 2-2 right at the death by a brave Juve side.Roma were made to pay for missed chances as a streetwise Juve found the equaliser right at the death, Iaquinta heading home directly from a Chiellini throw-in.
It was a goal from nothing, essentially, and a bitter blow for the Romans while also serving a clear sign that Juventus cannot be underestimated this season.

Sampdoria 0 – 0 Genoa

The Derby della Lanterna finally returned to the top flight after almost 13 years but unfortunately it was not worth the long wait as neither Sampdoria nor Genoa were able to overcome their nerves to produce the kind of quality needed to take three points from this ill-tempered affair. The weight of the occassion was obvious from the start with every square inch being hotly contested and every refereeing decisoin being passionately protested. There was a Sampdoria debut for Antonio Cassano, who came on as a 75th minute sub, but despite some neat touches even he was powerless to prevent the game from running its course without a goal.

Torino 1 - 1 Siena
Torino could only manage a 1-1 tie with ten-man Siena in what might even be considered a missed opportunity by the visitors.

Week 4-23/9/07

AS Roma 2 - 2 Juventus
Atalanta 2 - 1 Lazio
Cagliari 0 - 1 Palermo

Serie A Midweek Wrap Up`s:

Catania 1 - 0 Empoli

Catania finally became reacquainted with the art of the win after a close-fought victory over fellow strugglers Empoli.
Jorge Martinez struck two minutes after half time after good play from Tedesco to seal the points for the Sicilians, who move up to five points and leave the visitors behind on just two.

Fiorentina 2 - 2 Roma

The marquee match of the fifth round of the Serie A lived up to expectations and then some as Fiorentina managed to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Roma in an exhillearing encounter that on its own could stand to debunk the myth that Italian football is overly defensive and boring. A cheeky penalty kick by Adrian Mutu on 78 minutes salvaged his side a precious point after wonderful goals by Giuly and Mancini sandwiched a first-half strike by Gamberini.

Genoa 3 - 1 Udinese

Ten-man Genoa, meanwhile, also picked up their first victory of the campaign, overcoming Udinese 3-1 at the Luigi Ferraris with no small measure of difficulty.
It was a night to remember for Marco Borriello (pictured), who grabbed a hat-trick to sink the visitors.

Inter 3 - 0 Sampdoria

Clearly looking like they had a point to prove, Inter convincingly beat Sampdoria 3-0 at home and caught up with Roma on top of the Serie A table. The game thus ended in a deserved victory for Inter, who were more clinical than usual with their chances. The Nerazzurri join Roma on top of the table

Juventus 4 - 0 Reggina

Juventus produced a magnificent second-half performance to pummel Reggina 4-0 and move into second place in the Serie A standings, just one point behind Inter and Roma. Nicola Legrottaglie, Hasan Salihamidzic, David Trezeguet and Raffaele Palladino all scored in the second-period as La Vecchia Signora fired out a clear signal to the rest of the league.

Lazio 3 – 1 Cagliari

Lazio picked up a deserved three points over Cagliari thanks to a second-half spurt.
The biancocelesti dominated possession in the first half, but the visitors in fact looked more dangerous early on. That was all to change when Mauri set up Rocchi for the opener three minutes into the second period..

Napoli 1 – 0 Livorno

Napoli grabbed a late win over Livorno thanks to Roberto Sosa's late strike.
The veteran forward had the only goal of the game in a match that the visitors never really got into, although Napoli were far from perfect, too.
Nonetheless, they did enough to secure yet another win to take them up to ten points. Livorno, meanwhile, sit on just two.

Palermo 2 – 1 Milan

The Rossoneri continued their difficult moment in the Italian topflight as Palermo came back from behind to beat the European Champions at the Barbera stadium in the fifth matchday in Serie A.
A stoppage time goal by Fabrizio Miccoli condemned Milan to their first league defeat of the season, but more worryingly the Rossoneri lost further ground from the top positions as they have now gone four consecutive matches without a win.

Parma 2 – 0 Torino

Parma grabbed their first win in five, Torino leaving the Tardini with nothing.
The visitors looked listless in the first period but kept it 0-0, only for a quickfire double in the second half to seal their fate.
First, Reginaldo buried it after being given space and time in the box, then the ever-dangerous Corradi got on the scoresheet after good work from Coly and Pisanu.

Siena 1 – 1 Atalanta

Siena made it three out of five after a 1-1 home tie with Atalanta.
Doni's superb effort cancelled out Loria's early strike to punish the attack-minded home team.
Despite their ambition, the Robur remain on three points, while the Bergamese move up to nine.

Serie A Weekend Wrap Up`s:

Roma 1- 4 Inter

Defending Serie A champions Inter Milan delivered a real statement of intent by hammering fellow title hopefuls Roma 4-1 in their own backyard.
The Nerazzurri were slightly flattered by the result as they had the luxury of playing more than two-thirds of the match with a man advantage after Giuly’s straight red card for a handball on his own goal-line.Mancini got everything right on the night, starting with a tactical surprise by deploying Ibrahimovic alone in front of a five-man midfield in order to stifle the host’s best department of the field. Inter have their heads held high and full of confidence, and so they should as sole leaders of the Serie A.

Livorno 0 - 3 Fiorentina

Fiorentina have moved to within two points of new league leaders Inter with a comprehensive 3-0 victory away to Livorno. In the final part of the match, Fiorentina continued to attack, and even went close to adding a fourth again through Santana, Bogdani, and also with substitute Christian Vieri, whose typically powerful left-footed shot went on the post in the 77th minute.
Livorno were eventually spared further embarassment as their poor start to the season continues. They remain bottom of the table with just two points, while Fiorentina momentarily rise to second place, with 12 points, as they await the results of tomorrow's games involving Napoli, Juventus, and Palermo.

Cagliari 1 - 0 Siena
Cagliari welcomed Siena to Sardinia, only to send their visitors home with nothing to show for the journey, despite a largely even balance of play.
It was on-loan wunderkind Pasquale Foggia who opened the scoring, but sadly it was not a spectacular solo effort after one of his trademark runs down the flank.
Instead, it was from the spot, the midfielder duly netting a penalty after Bucchi's handball on the 7 minute mark.
But the bianconeri failed to lie down, attempting to come back into things with a series of forward-looking manouerves. Galloppa was just inches away from levelling the scores, but, on the other hand, Acquafresca might have made it 2-0 before half time.
Siena dominated possession for the second period but found chances hard to come by as a dogged Cagliari side defended nicely to keep the three points on the island.

Empoli 3 - 1 Palermo
Empoli, meanwhile, had to come from behind to seal an exciting and deserved win over high-flying Palermo. A win was more than merited by the Tuscans - but they left it late.
After an exciting first half in which the home team had the best of the chances, it was in fact the rosanero that took the advantage into the interval.
The home side relished their goal, but the energy levels seemed to drop after that, all their possession giving them little by way of chances.
Palermo, meanwhile, were stunned by the equaliser and themselves could produce few opportunities as full time beckoned.
But a chance did come for the home side - and they duly took it, Giovinco firing home late on to seal the points.

Milan 1 - 1 Catania

Milan's Serie A problems go from bad to worse after a hugely disappointing 1-1 draw with Catania at San Siro. The Sicilian outfit thoroughly deserved their point against a lacklustre Milan team who created few clear-cut chances all game.

Napoli 1 - 2 Genoa
Genoa visited Napoli for a closed-door game that gave the rossoblu every chance of their second season victory. They took the opportunity, in fact, to leave the San Paolo with all three points, although it wasn't easy.
The visitors did take an early lead, Paolo Cannavaro putting through his own net early on after Leon played the ball into the danger area.
From there on, though, Napoli controlled the bulk of the possession, but gutsy defending by the away team kept the hosts at bay for the remainder of the first half.
Indeed, the ciucciarelli needed a penalty to restore parity, Lavezzi apparently being brought down in the box 52 minutes in. Domizzi duly stepped up to make it 1-1.
Napoli enjoyed a brief period of resurgence after this, but slowed down as the final quarter-hour approached, allowing Genoa back into the game in earnest.
And, in dramatic circumstances, the winner came. Borriello's cross met Sculli, who headed home for a fine win in the strangest of settings.

Reggina 1 – 1 Lazio
Reggina almost picked up a home win over Lazio, only for a late equaliser to spare the capital side's blushes.
Cozza gave the Calabrians a 7th minute lead, alighting on a defensive error to cooly beat Muslera in the Roman goal.

Sampdoria 3 – 0 Atalanta

Sampdoria put their poor run of form behind them to rack up an initially close-fought, but eventually convincing win over ailing Atalanta at the Ferraris.
While this was a largely even match, a goal early in each half sank the visitors, Bellucci opening the scoring after just three minutes after some weak defending put the visionary Vincenzo Montella (pictured) through to assist. Atalanta were looking useful in midfield but all too often saw their opportunities break down in the final third. They were made to pay for their wastefulness not long before the hour mark as the scoreboard read 2-0. Once again Montella was involved, threading a near-post cross through to Sammarco, who did well to head past Coppola.
Antonio Cassano, brought on as a second half substitute, looked lively at times and grabbed a goal - and the headlines - to seal the points

Udinese 2 – 1 Parma
Udinese welcomed Parma to the Friuli, taking all three points with a last-second winner after a tough game that saw the advantage swing from team to team.
In fact, it was to lead to all three. Zapata managed a goal with what turned out to be the last real touch of the ball, Parma's Di Carlo seeing red soon after for protesting the circumstances of the goal.
Protest or no, it's another home win for Udinese, and more woe for Parma.

Torino 0-1 Juventus

The first Derby della Mole since 2003 was won by Juventus in the most dramatic of fashions as a 92nd minute stunner by David Trezeguet cruelly sent Torino crumbling to their knees and the Bianconeri legions into a frenzy..It was a compelling match from start to finish despite a relative lack of clear cut opportunities as both sets of players were full of endeavour and 100 percent committed to the cause. Just as it looked certain that the honours were going to be shared, the white-hot French striker stole the headlines with a lethal volley which established the 07/08 edition of the Old Lady as genuine candidates for the title.

Serie A Weekend Wrap Up`s:

Atalanta 0 - 0 Udinese
Boring??

Inter 2 – 1 Napoli

A first half brace from Julio Cruz was enough to secure a win for Inter, and send them four points clear at the top of Serie A. A late strike from substitute Roberto Sosa offered some hope to the visitors, but that was as it remained.A first half brace from Julio Cruz was enough to secure a win for Inter, and send them four points clear at the top of Serie A. A late strike from substitute Roberto Sosa offered some hope to the visitors, but that was as it remained. However, an alerted Inter side kept their heads about them and saw out the final six minutes and injury time to secure full points, and go four clear at the top.

Catania 1 - 0 Livorno
Catania welcomed Livorno for what was already being dubbed a relegation scrap and, on this form, it's clear to see that it's the Amaranto who are in the biggest danger of going down. For the Sicilians more than deserved their win, Sardo heading them in front early on

Fiorentina 1 – 1 Juventus

Juventus almost pulled off a win at Fiorentina after Vincenzo Iaquinta netted against the run of play early on, the Old Lady largely looking the better side afterwards.
However, the vocal home support was finally given a reason to go wild as Adrian Mutu slotted home a late penalty for an equaliser.

Genoa 2 – 0 Cagliari

Cagliari, meanwhile, collapsed at Genoa, the Genovese successfully maintaining their fine home record.
The Sardinians came with defence on their minds, attempting to contain a rossoblu side that started in fine form, thanks to the input of the likes of Borriello and Sculli.

Lazio 1 – 5 Milan

Milan easily disposed of Lazio especially thanks to a brilliant second half performance which highlighted the fact that the Biancocelesti are in desperate need of a goalkeeper following the terrible performance of Muslera, at fault on all of the Rossoneri’s goals.n the end it was a deserved win for Milan, especially for what they showed in the second half, proving that there is light at the end of the tunnel. On the other hand, Lazio have certainly let their fans down following the excellent performance against Real Madrid last Wednesday, as the Biancocelesti will definitely need some reinforcements in January considering the many injuries and lack of decent substitutes for key positions.
Milan have now climbed to 9th place in Serie A with 10 points from 7 matches played, whereas Lazio’s misery continues as the team remains anchored in 13th place with just 7 points to show.

Palermo 1 – 1 Reggina
Palermo badly needed a result from their home encounter with Reggina, their European hopes already extinguished for this season after a midweek UEFA Cup exit, but - somehow - found the going extremely tough against the Calabrians.
Deep into stoppage time, Amoruso netted on his first real counterattack of the entire half, striking past Fontana to stun the dominant hosts. But just as it seemed that Palermo were subject to another maddening defeat, Amauri proved the saviour with a 49th minute equaliser.

Parma 0 – 3 Roma

It was a comfortable afternoon for Roma at the Stadio Tardini, as a brace from Francesco Totti and a strike from Amantino Mancini earned the Giallorossi a 3-0 victory against ten-man Parma.

Siena 3 – 0 Empoli
Siena overcame their first half nerves to thrash a ten-man Empoli side that never really got going at the Franchi.First, Maccarone netted from the spot after Adani conceded a penalty for hacking down the striker, picking up a red card in the process. That opened the floodgates, the bianconeri adding two goals in three minutes near the end.

Torino 1 – 0 Sampdoria
Torino welcomed Sampdoria for a game that perhaps had draw written all over it, each of Toro's previous league games ending in a tie. With stoppage time looming, Corini got on the end of the ball after some swift buildup from Recoba and Malonga, giving the home side a vital first victory of the season.

Serie A Weekend Wrap Up`s:

Atalanta 2 - 2 Torino
Ten-man 'Toro' seemed set to succumb to Atalanta in Bergamo, but a spectacular fightback saw the home side surrender all three points to their plucky visitors. It took a while for La Dea to get going. After the 20th minute, they found themselves more able to capitalise on the ample space left by the visitors, but a goal was not forthcoming. A strike did come, though, just on the stroke of half time. Adriano Ferreira Pinto, the Brazilian striker, evaded Lanna to bundle home Zampagna's left-hand cross.
Tempers were already running high at this point, Bjelanovic being substituted for the visitors after picking up a booking, and the away side's fury doubled when they conceded both a penalty and a red card.
Cesare Natali trudged off as Doni converted the penalty, but the perceived injustice seemed to do Torino good as they pulled one back.
With fifteen minutes left, Rosina and Comotto combined well to free Ventola in the area, who calmly finished to give Toro a lifeline.
And they were redeemed once and for all just three minutes from the end as Motta equalised, disgusting the home support but giving Toro coach Walter Novellino an afternoon that he won't soon forget.

Cagliari 1 - 1 Catania
Catania impressed in their visit to Sardinia but couldn't hold on for the three points as the home side recovered from a poor start. Many have expressed surprise that the Sicilians are comfortably mid-table at present, but as they opened the scoring early on it seemed to be the natural order of things.Terilizzi's eleventh-minute strike gave them an advantage that they were to preserve with ease until the interval, with the visitors perhaps being unlucky not to add to their tally.
They soon rued being unable to do so as, within seconds of the restart, Cagliari grabbed an unlikely equaliser.
Matri beautifully headed home Fini's cross as Cagliari were allowed back into the game. The second half was somewhat more even but, as the wind picked up, the game of football slowed down as damage limitation took over.Still, it was encouraging enough for the visitors, although the home side will worry that their season has yet to really begin.

Fiorentina 3 - 0 Siena
La Viola kept up their fight at the summit with a routine victory over Siena in the Tuscan derby.Fiorentina's attacking 4-3-3 formation took the game to 'Robur' and were rewarded a mere 15 minutes in when Pazzini netted the opening goal. The striker got on the end of Semioli's cross, controlling it on his chest before acrobatically slamming home past Eleftheropolous.Just after the half hour point, Adrian Mutu made it 2-0. Pazzini was once again involved as Mutu made it six for the season with a routine finish.Fiorentina were firmly in control going into half time, with the visitors clearly needing to change their approach. Thankfully, for the sake of the game, they did, and the game was far more open and lively as the hour mark approached.Nonetheless, the home side were in control, and when Christian Vieri netted on the counterattack, it really was all over, and the home side were well worth their three points

Juventus 1-0 Genoa

Alessandro Del Piero celebrated his new contract by hitting the winner as Juventus moved back into second-place in Serie A with a narrow victory over Genoa. The Golden Boy rolled back the years with a sensational individual performance and delivered the perfect response to all the critics who say his days at the top are coming to an end.
Del Piero's goal came in the 36th minute in a hotly-contested match.

Livorno 0 - 1 Lazio

Lazio were the better side during this largely uninspiring clash in Livorno, but it took a goal deep, deep into stoppage time in the first half to separate the pair at the Armando Picchi.
The home side sat back for the duration of the first half; this approach seemed to be successful as Lazio managed only the occasional shot on target, despite their clear advantage in possession and the midfield.
Still, their perseverance paid off as, 49 minutes into the first half, Goran Pandev shooting from the edge of a crowded area to spare the Romans' blushes. The second half saw more of the same. Baronio's brilliant effort just before the 60th minute was the highlight, but even then Marco Amelia was able to steer the ball to safety.
Firmani saw red for Lazio with twenty minutes to go, emboldening the home side somewhat. Still, they found clear-cut chances hard to come by as the sky blues threw down the shutters, and 0-1 it remained.
Indeed, as Livorno gave up hope, Pandev might have even made it 2-0 at the end, but three points was the mission and Lazio completed it comfortably.

Milan 0 - 1 Empoli

Milan started brightly against Empoli, but a mediocre display overall saw them lose out to tiny Empoli in front of a furious San Siro crowd.
Luca Saudati's second-half goal was enough to give the visitors an historic victory, despite Milan's go-for-broke attitude towards the end.

Reggina 0-1 Inter Milan

Adriano went back to goalscoring ways as Inter picked up a difficult but crucial 1-0 win at Reggina, which takes them five points clear on top of the table ahead of tomorrow's games. After the 4-4 draw earlier today between Roma and Napoli, Inter had the chance to go five points clear on top the table on their trip to Reggina. And so it turned out to be, but the Nerazzurri were made to suffer to obtain this result by a resilient home side who always kept the match interesting.

Roma 4-4 Napoli

It rained goals at the Stadio Olimpico as Roma and Napoli went hammer and tongs with each other. Totti, Perrott, De Rossi, Pizarro, Lavezzi, Hamsik, Gargano and Zalayeta all scored in this pulsating, see-sawing 4-4 draw...After a 7 year absence from Serie A the Derby del Sud returned in fine fashion as this was the most entertaining match of the season thus far.

Sampdoria 3 - 0 Parma
Sampdoria atoned for their hit-and-miss start to the campaign with an emphatic thrashing of a Parma side that are now confirmed relegation candidates. The visitors did not disgrace themselves early on as they started confidently, but it was clear who was the better side after the Genovese took a 25th minute lead. There were shades of deflection about Vincenzo Montella's effort, but regardless, it hit the back of the net, and Parma duly collapsed.
True, they kept the score down going into the interval, but the blucerchiati made it two just after the restart.Claudio Bellucci left Bucci standing helpless as the second half began and then, just twelve minutes later, the goalkeeper was once again left fuming after his parry was swept home by the aforementioned striker.
Parma's spirits were well and truly deflated by this time, and all that was left was for Samp to run down the clock for a fine and vital victory.

Udinese 1 - 1 Palermo
Udinese were made to sweat by Palermo, the Sicilians taking an early lead despite not looking much like the better side. Still, the Friuli did enough to equalise for a much-needed point.
