Serie A Weekend Wrap Up`s:
Atalanta 2 - 2 Torino
Ten-man 'Toro' seemed set to succumb to Atalanta in Bergamo, but a spectacular fightback saw the home side surrender all three points to their plucky visitors. It took a while for La Dea to get going. After the 20th minute, they found themselves more able to capitalise on the ample space left by the visitors, but a goal was not forthcoming. A strike did come, though, just on the stroke of half time. Adriano Ferreira Pinto, the Brazilian striker, evaded Lanna to bundle home Zampagna's left-hand cross.
Tempers were already running high at this point, Bjelanovic being substituted for the visitors after picking up a booking, and the away side's fury doubled when they conceded both a penalty and a red card.
Cesare Natali trudged off as Doni converted the penalty, but the perceived injustice seemed to do Torino good as they pulled one back.
With fifteen minutes left, Rosina and Comotto combined well to free Ventola in the area, who calmly finished to give Toro a lifeline.
And they were redeemed once and for all just three minutes from the end as Motta equalised, disgusting the home support but giving Toro coach Walter Novellino an afternoon that he won't soon forget.
Cagliari 1 - 1 Catania
Catania impressed in their visit to Sardinia but couldn't hold on for the three points as the home side recovered from a poor start. Many have expressed surprise that the Sicilians are comfortably mid-table at present, but as they opened the scoring early on it seemed to be the natural order of things.Terilizzi's eleventh-minute strike gave them an advantage that they were to preserve with ease until the interval, with the visitors perhaps being unlucky not to add to their tally.
They soon rued being unable to do so as, within seconds of the restart, Cagliari grabbed an unlikely equaliser.
Matri beautifully headed home Fini's cross as Cagliari were allowed back into the game. The second half was somewhat more even but, as the wind picked up, the game of football slowed down as damage limitation took over.Still, it was encouraging enough for the visitors, although the home side will worry that their season has yet to really begin.
Fiorentina 3 - 0 Siena
La Viola kept up their fight at the summit with a routine victory over Siena in the Tuscan derby.Fiorentina's attacking 4-3-3 formation took the game to 'Robur' and were rewarded a mere 15 minutes in when Pazzini netted the opening goal. The striker got on the end of Semioli's cross, controlling it on his chest before acrobatically slamming home past Eleftheropolous.Just after the half hour point, Adrian Mutu made it 2-0. Pazzini was once again involved as Mutu made it six for the season with a routine finish.Fiorentina were firmly in control going into half time, with the visitors clearly needing to change their approach. Thankfully, for the sake of the game, they did, and the game was far more open and lively as the hour mark approached.Nonetheless, the home side were in control, and when Christian Vieri netted on the counterattack, it really was all over, and the home side were well worth their three points
Juventus 1-0 Genoa
Alessandro Del Piero celebrated his new contract by hitting the winner as Juventus moved back into second-place in Serie A with a narrow victory over Genoa. The Golden Boy rolled back the years with a sensational individual performance and delivered the perfect response to all the critics who say his days at the top are coming to an end.
Del Piero's goal came in the 36th minute in a hotly-contested match.
Livorno 0 - 1 Lazio
Lazio were the better side during this largely uninspiring clash in Livorno, but it took a goal deep, deep into stoppage time in the first half to separate the pair at the Armando Picchi.
The home side sat back for the duration of the first half; this approach seemed to be successful as Lazio managed only the occasional shot on target, despite their clear advantage in possession and the midfield.
Still, their perseverance paid off as, 49 minutes into the first half, Goran Pandev shooting from the edge of a crowded area to spare the Romans' blushes. The second half saw more of the same. Baronio's brilliant effort just before the 60th minute was the highlight, but even then Marco Amelia was able to steer the ball to safety.
Firmani saw red for Lazio with twenty minutes to go, emboldening the home side somewhat. Still, they found clear-cut chances hard to come by as the sky blues threw down the shutters, and 0-1 it remained.
Indeed, as Livorno gave up hope, Pandev might have even made it 2-0 at the end, but three points was the mission and Lazio completed it comfortably.
Milan 0 - 1 Empoli
Milan started brightly against Empoli, but a mediocre display overall saw them lose out to tiny Empoli in front of a furious San Siro crowd.
Luca Saudati's second-half goal was enough to give the visitors an historic victory, despite Milan's go-for-broke attitude towards the end.
Reggina 0-1 Inter Milan
Adriano went back to goalscoring ways as Inter picked up a difficult but crucial 1-0 win at Reggina, which takes them five points clear on top of the table ahead of tomorrow's games. After the 4-4 draw earlier today between Roma and Napoli, Inter had the chance to go five points clear on top the table on their trip to Reggina. And so it turned out to be, but the Nerazzurri were made to suffer to obtain this result by a resilient home side who always kept the match interesting.
Roma 4-4 Napoli
It rained goals at the Stadio Olimpico as Roma and Napoli went hammer and tongs with each other. Totti, Perrott, De Rossi, Pizarro, Lavezzi, Hamsik, Gargano and Zalayeta all scored in this pulsating, see-sawing 4-4 draw...After a 7 year absence from Serie A the Derby del Sud returned in fine fashion as this was the most entertaining match of the season thus far.
Sampdoria 3 - 0 Parma
Sampdoria atoned for their hit-and-miss start to the campaign with an emphatic thrashing of a Parma side that are now confirmed relegation candidates. The visitors did not disgrace themselves early on as they started confidently, but it was clear who was the better side after the Genovese took a 25th minute lead. There were shades of deflection about Vincenzo Montella's effort, but regardless, it hit the back of the net, and Parma duly collapsed.
True, they kept the score down going into the interval, but the blucerchiati made it two just after the restart.Claudio Bellucci left Bucci standing helpless as the second half began and then, just twelve minutes later, the goalkeeper was once again left fuming after his parry was swept home by the aforementioned striker.
Parma's spirits were well and truly deflated by this time, and all that was left was for Samp to run down the clock for a fine and vital victory.
Udinese 1 - 1 Palermo
Udinese were made to sweat by Palermo, the Sicilians taking an early lead despite not looking much like the better side. Still, the Friuli did enough to equalise for a much-needed point.
