Serie A Wrap Up:

Sampdoria, Lazio, Milan Beaten, Parma Win Thriller

It's been a largely cagey afternoon in Serie A, with precious few goals to speak of. Some arenas saw no small measure of excitement, though: Parma and Livorno battled to an entertaining relegation dogfight, Catania shocked Sampdoria and, elsewhere, Lazio's questionable form continued...

Catania 2 - 0 Sampdoria
Sampdoria were left to rue defensive mistakes as Catania twice punished their carelessness in a close-fought match in Sicily.
Within two minutes, Sala gifted Mascara the ball and, from medium range, the Catania striker fired past Mirante to give the home crowd something to cheer about.
Both sides had their chances after that, Zenoni looking lively for the visitors, but in fact it would be 2-0 just before half time as Mascara this time turned the architect. He crossed in for Martinez, who rose above a static defence to head home.
It wasn't to be the blucerchiati's day, with Antonio Cassano subsequently having to come off, and then a series of chances going begging - admittedly for both teams - as the home side enjoyed a rare and vital win.

Empoli 0 - 1 Atalanta
After a slow first half, Atalanta recovered to rack up a late win against an Empoli side that, while impressive in spells, lacked any true cutting edge.
The hosts were in control for much of the first half but, despite good chances for the likes of Pozzi, could do little with the ball. Indeed, Atalanta perhaps had the best half of the opening period, only for Zampagna to miss from 8 yards minutes before the interval.
Doni was able to make up for that mistake fifteen minutes from the end, Carrozzieri's ball from the left meeting the forward for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
For Empoli, it was a come-down after last week's San Siro heroics, but one that they can complain little about.

Lazio 0 - 1 Udinese
Lazio's questionable domestic form continues apace with a poor home defeat against an Udinese side that started and continued in ambitious fashion.
The zebras had the best of the first period, Ballotta having to be at his best to stop Quagriaella, Asamoah and D'Agotsino, but the attacking trio could not make the breakthrough, despite their best efforts.

Milan 0 - 1 Roma

Mirko Vucinic's late goal was enough to separate the sides after an even and exciting match at the San Siro. Both sides had their periods of ascendancy, but Roma's were more sustained and certainly more clinical, as demonstrated by Vucinic's header following a Cicinho cross fifteen minutes from the end.De Rossi should have made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Ambrosini picked up a second booking for a foul in the box, but his effort was laughable; nonetheless, Roma had done enough to win.

Palermo 0 - 0 Inter
Inter had the best of the chances but couldn't quite keep up their tremendous form with a win at Palermo.Nonetheless, Palermo held on, and despite it being a home game the Sicilians may regard it as a point gained, rather than two dropped.

Parma 3 - 2 Livorno
In an incident-packed and bad-tempered relegation dogfight, Parma emerged the victors thanks to a late goal from Morfeo.

Siena 0 - 0 Reggina
Finally, despite their dominance, Tuscan strugglers Siena couldn't find a way past their southern counterparts in this encounter, the likes of Frick and Bucchi spurning a host of chances in each half.

Napoli 3-1 Juventus

It was a tale of two penalties at San Paolo as Napoli came from behind to pick up a 3-1 win over Juventus.

Torino 2 - 0 Cagliari
Torino beat Cagliari 2-0 thanks to a goal by Alessandro Rosina and an own goal in the final twenty minutes of this first match of the 9th Serie A matchday. After a couple of excellent results for Torino (a 1-0 home win over Sampdoria and a 2-2 draw away to Atalanta obtained after going 2-0 down and being reduced to 10 men), luck seemed to have turned its head on them in the first half of today's match against Cagliari, which saw them hit the woodwork twice through playmaker Alessandro Rosina and midfielder Tommaso Vailatti.

Midweek Wrap Up:

The big runs all managed impressive wins, but Livorno also managed their own historic victory. Fiorentina, meanwhile, edged closer to the top with three vital points...

Atalanta 2 - 2 Cagliari
Atalanta were almost shocked in Bergamo by a spirited Sardinian side that gave as good as they got.True, the home team looked stronger early on, testing Fortin as the visitors sat back, but Cagliari were good for a long range effort or two early in the first half. However, the island side began to rest on their laurels, allowing Doni to conclude a fine attacking move that took advantage of their defensive frailties, thus securing the draw, even after Zampagna's late sending-off.

Fiorentina 1 - 0 Napoli
It wasn't always easy, but Fiorentina did enough to seal the win against a Napoli side unable to repeat the feats from their Juventus victory. What do you do when clinical finishing is a problem? Turn to a veteran. That's exactly what Fiorentina did as the Viola grabbed a lead on the hour mark through Christian Vieri. He linked up well with Mutu, dribbled up to visiting 'keeper Iezzo, and showed the calcio world that he was still a force to be reckoned with.

Inter 4 - 1 Genoa

Inter wasted no time in sinking Genoa, Cordoba's 8th minute goal giving the home side the advantage in this San Siro clash. While the seasiders did have some chances of their own, Cambiasso's strike early in the second half sealed victory for the nerazzurri juggernaut. As if to spark a revival, Konko pulled a goal back for Genoa but, mere seconds later, Suazo showed him who was boss, and the game was over, Cruz adding a late penalty as further punishment...

Juventus 3 - 0 Empoli

Juventus, meanwhile, started slowly against recent giant-killers Empoli, but eventually established their dominance with a second half rout. After a slow first period, the Old Lady romped to victory thanks to splendid second half hat-trick from David Trezeguet. That'll be his critics silenced, then...

Palermo 1 - 1 Parma
Palermo averted disaster yet another stuttering performance at the Renzo Barbera. Careless play resulted in a draw with lowly Parma - and only a late penalty took them there.

Reggina 1 - 3 Livorno
Livorno battled hard to regain their lead and then cement victory late on as they leapfrogged the Calabrese side at the foot of Serie A.It was not a day to be a goalkeeper as virtually every chance on target resulted in a change to the scoreboard. Campagnolo discovered as much when Pulzetti gave his side a half hour lead, but Reggina drew level seconds later when Amoruso finished powerfully. The Amaranto looked the better side for much of the second half but not until Valdez put through his own net fifteen minutes from time did they have the lead again. Then, with just two minutes left on the clock, Rossini cut in nicely from the left to make it 3-1 and give Livorno their first win of the season.

Roma 3 - 2 Lazio

It was far from easy, but Roma finally ended their hoodoo of over three seasons without a Derby della Capitale win in Serie A with a 3-2 victory. Rocchi gave the blue half of Rome the lead before Vucinic, Mancini and finally Perrotta made it 3-2, only for Ledesma to pull one back. The giallorossi will celebrate tonight after a merited win..

Sampdoria 0 - 5 Milan

Just like Juventus, Milan endured a nervy start before running absolutely wild in the second period. Kaka opened the scoring before the much-maligned Alberto Gilardino netted twice, his partner-in-criticism Yoann Gourcuff further killing things off with a deserved fourth. Seedorf made it five ten minutes from time, and that was that. What a fightback after a poor first half!

Siena 1 - 1 Catania
The uncharitable might call it a relegation dogfight, and that's pretty much how it turned out as Robur went ahead, only for the Sicilians to peg them back right at the end. After a goalless first period, the match seemed to be heading for stalemate, despite increasing urgency from the home side in particular. That paid off ten minutes from time as De Ceglie made it 1-0. His strike was all the more impressive for his being on the pitch a mere two minutes. However, right at the death, Juan Vargas popped up to beat Eleftheropolous and rescue a point for the visitors.

Udinese 2 - 1 Torino
`Toro's 50-50 start to the season rolls on as high-flying Udinese picked up a merited three points at the Friuli.Floro Flores made it 1-0 25 minutes in as the Zebras looked to improve on their mixed home record, and Inler's goal minutes into the second half seemed to confirm that all three points were staying with the bianconeri. However, Ventola's strike ten minutes later gave Torino a glimmer of hope, albeit a forlorn one as the Udine men made it 18 points from a potential 30.

Update:

A surprising number of Italian outfits left it late today as no fewer than four teams grabbed last-minute levelers across the peninsula. Sampdoria and Atalanta managed away wins, but elsewhere, a share of the spoils was all that resulted...

CAGLIARI 0 SAMPDORIA 3
Sampdoria recovered from Wednesday's 5-0 home defeat to AC Milan to crush Cagliari 3-0 in Sardinia.
Sergio Volpi gave Samp the lead in the 33rd minute with a thunderous, right-footed shot from outside the area.
Andrea Caracciolo fired home the rebound of his own effort six minutes later and Christian Maggio headed in a Claudio Bellucci free kick to seal the win just before half time.
Samp's Mirko Pieri was sent off in the 68th for a nasty foul on Pasquale Foggia.

CATANIA 1 ATALANTA 2
Atalanta claimed the points thanks to two Antonio Langella goals scored in the space of two minutes in the second half.
Catania reduced the deficit eight minutes from time thanks to Gionatha Spinesi's right-footed shot from the edge of the area.
Atalanta's Cristiano Doni missed a spot-kick, conceded for a foul on Sergio Floccari, in the 24th minute.

EMPOLI 2 AS ROMA 2

The Tuscan minnows came from two goals down to earn a draw that lifted them out of the relegation zone.
French midfielder Ludovic Giuly opened the score in the 13th minute with a precise shot into the far corner after some neat passing at the edge of the box.
Matteo Brighi headed in a cross from Brazilian winger Mancini to double the lead in the 32nd.
Ighli Vannucchi pulled one back for Empoli with a long-distance strike in the 67th and Sebastian Giovinco stunned title contenders Roma with a splendid stoppage-time free kick.

GENOA 3 PALERMO 3

The Sicilians went ahead in the eighth minute when Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani tucked away a low Fabio Simplicio pass from the baseline.
Julio Leon rifled in a free kick to equalise in the 59th and then put the home side in front seven minutes later, only for Palermo's Franco Brienza to even things up again with a header in the 76th.
Genoa thought they had won when Marco Borriello fired home in the 82nd but Brazilian striker Amauri headed in a Simplicio free kick to snatch a draw in stoppage time.

LIVORNO 0 UDINESE 0
A second-half effort by Livorno striker Alessandro Diamanti that produced a great save from Udinese keeper Samir Handanovic was the highlight of an uneventful draw.

NAPOLI 1 REGGINA 1
The arrival of new coach Renzo Ulivieri, who replaced the sacked Massimo Ficcadenti on Thursday, was not enough to spur basement club Reggina to their first win of the season.
Napoli's Argentine striker Ezequiel Lavezzi scrambled home a late goal to cancel out Luca Vigiani's 54th-minute header. Napoli's Emanuele Calaio missed a penalty in the 76th after Salvatore Aronica brought down Lavezzi.

PARMA 2 SIENA 2
Parma striker Bernardo Corradi, on loan from Manchester City, broke free of his markers to slip home a Reginaldo cross in the 23rd minute.
Paolo De Ceglie levelled matters 10 minutes later with a fine, diagonal, left-footed effort.
Parma regained the lead in the second half with Davide Matteini but Daniele Galloppa earned Siena a draw with a fine strike that took a deflection on its way to the net in the closing stages.

JUVENTUS 1 INTER MILAN 1

Inter took the lead in the 41st minute through Argentine striker Julio Cruz, who controlled midfielder Cesar's defence-splitting pass with his chest and slotted the ball past Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Juve midfielder Mauro Camoranesi came off the bench to earn his side a draw, finding the net from the centre of the penalty area in the 77th minute after Vincenzo Iaquinta's header.

AC MILAN 0 TORINO 0
European champions AC Milan are still seeking their first league win of the season at home after being held to a goalless draw by a dogged Torino side.Alberto Gilardino wasted two excellent chances laid on by Clarence Seedorf in the first half.Milan had a shout for a penalty denied after the break when Cesare Natali barged Massimo Ambrosini over in the area.
Filippo Inzaghi fired into the side netting when clean through on goal in the 78th minute.

LAZIO 0 FIORENTINA 1
Giampaolo Pazzini pounced to score the winner in the 19th minute after a blunder by Lazio's 43-year-old keeper Marco Ballotta, who let go of the ball as he tried to stop a back header going out for a corner.
Pazzini almost made it 2-0 in the 74th when he shot against the crossbar.
Fiorentina's French keeper Sebastien Frey did well to keep out an angled Massimo Mutarelli effort eight minutes from time. Mutarelli was sent off in stoppage time after picking up a second yellow card.
The victory maintained Fiorentina's unbeaten record.

Serie A Weekend Wrap`s:

Away from the limelight of Milan's near-treacherous trip to Catania, Livorno's resurgence continued with a convincing win over Sampdoria, while Udinese and Napoli racked up useful home wins...

Genoa 0 – 1 Roma

Roma were under pressure to get a result in this tough away tie as a win would have allowed them to reach Inter on top of the table, ahead of the Nerazzurri's easy-looking match tonight against Atalanta at San Siro.
This turned out to be the case, as only a last-minute goal by Christian Panucci, who's becoming something of a specialist in crucial last-minute goals from dead ball situations, allowed Roma to take all three points after a balanced match.

Inter 2 – 1 Atalanta

The pressure was on Inter in this game as they had to beat Atalanta in order to keep Roma, who had obtained a vital and somewhat lucky 1-0 win at Genoa two hours earlier, at a distance on top of the table. In the first half, the Nerazzurri started brightly and took a 1-0 lead inside ten minutes, as Suazo scored his second goal for the club after a splendid one-two with Julio Cruz inside the area (10').The Honduran continued to trouble the Atalanta defence in the following minutes with his speed and physicality, although the next chance fell on Cruz, who found his way past two defenders inside the area, but his shot was deflected out (23').Not much later, the Argentinean striker doubled the score for Inter, as captain Javier Zanetti found Suazo who sent in a cross that came off the post, and found Cruz all alone and ready to tap the ball in from close range (30'). Inter thus remain in first place with 28 points, while Atalanta are 6th with 18 points

Cagliari 1 – 2 Milan

Andrea Pirlo's late freekick which somehow evaded home keeper Marco Fortin helped Milan come from behind for victory. The home side had got off to a perfect start under new coach Nedo Sonetti when Robert Acquafresca powered in a header from a corner on four minutes.Milan were awarded a soft penalty just before halftime when Paolo Bianco was adjudged to have pulled Ronaldo's shirt as the Brazilian, making his first appearance of the season, tried to reach Gennaro Gattuso's header. Fortin dived to his right though to turn away Kaka's penalty.Ronaldo hit a post and Acquafresca nearly put the bottom side back infront when Daniele Bonera cleared his effort off the line. Gilardino grabbed Milan's equaliser when he took advantage of some sloppy defending to flick home on 61 minutes.

Empoli 0 – 0 Torino
The game ended goalless despite Torino playmaker and Italy hopeful Alessandro Rosina again pulling the strings with some exquisite play.
Enmpoli, who made the UEFA Cup after a stunning league performance last season, edge off the bottom with the point.

Lazio 1 – 0 Parma
Fabio Firmani's last-minute goal gave the home side an emotional victory after they remembered fan Gabriele Sandri, shot dead by a policeman two weeks ago.Andrea Gasbarroni shot over after a strong first half run for the visitors and Lazio defender Lionel Scaloni hit the post with a searing shot before Firmani smacked the woodwork from long range.
Lazio's Lorenzo De Silvestri, a friend of Sandri, had his name sewn into his boots while before kick off players from both sides paid their respects at a huge photo of Sandri behind the goal.

Livorno 3 – 1 Sampdoria
Livorno's Croatian defender Dario Knezevic headed in Giovanni Pasquale's cross on eight minutes before Francesco Tavano quickly doubled the home side's advantage when the striker cleverly turned in a free kick from the right.Tavano was on fire and soon had a dipping free kick tipped over the bar among other efforts as Livorno made a mockery of their lowly league place.Claudio Bellucci's acrobatic effort gave Sampdoria hope in the final 10 minutes but it was too late and Tavano grabbed a deserved second in the final stages.

Napoli 2 – 0 Catania

Former Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta put Napoli ahead just before the break when he ambled through a gap in the Catania defence and kept his cool to finish expertly. The Uruguayan repeated the trick midway through the second half to help promoted Napoli continue their strong return to the top flight. Influential Napoli midfielder Ezequiel Lavazzi went close with a well-worked effort on half an hour and the home side could have scored more on several occasions.

Reggina 0 – 0 Fiorentina
The visitors, without injured striker Adrian Mutu, lacked their usual cutting edge and flowing style in a dull draw. The home side appealed for handball inside the box in the first half but the referee awarded a freekick to Fiorentina for pushing. Fiorentina were without coach Cesare Prandelli, who missed the trip because of illness.

Udinese 2 – 0 Siena
The hosts moved up to joint second after comfortably beating the Tuscan strugglers despite being reduced to 10 men at the break.
Italy forward Fabio Quagliarella avoided being flagged offside when he tapped in for Udinese on 43 minutes but the home side's joy was soon tempered when defender Felipe was dismissed for a second booking.
Home boss Pasquale Marino, who signed a new long-term contract on Saturday, looked stunned by the decision in the dugout but was relieved when Antonio Di Natale finished off international team mate Quagliarella's pass late on.

Juventus 5 – 0 Palermo

Claudio Ranieri opted to field Vincenzo Iaquinta instead of Alessandro Del Piero, and in the end this proved a good choice. The Bianconeri started out strongly, and in the 4th minute Iaquinta almost opened the scoring thanks to a free-kick 23 metres away from goal, but Agliardi managed to deflect it away for a corner. Two minutes later it was David Trezeguet who tried his luck from 12 metres, but the ball went out. Another direct free-kick by Iaquinta saw Agliardi save in corner yet again, but in the 29th minute, the Palermo goalkeeper was unable to stop Trezeguet from putting Juventus ahead as the Frenchman turned towards goal an assist by Nicola Legrottaglie following a corner kick by Mauro German Camoranesi. In the 33rd minute Pavel Nedved almost scored the second goal for the Old Lady, but his shot from 17 metres was blocked by Barzagli with Agliardi out of position. Eight minutes later, though, Iaquinta made it 2-0 to the Bianconeri as he managed to react quickly after falling down in the penalty area, shooting from close range past the Rosanero keeper. In the 58th minute it was Palermo again who went close, but Amauri's header went just inches wide on the right hand side of Bufffon. From then onwards it was just Juventus as Del Piero substituted Iaquinta in the 68th minute; three minutes later Pinturiccho scored a wonderfully struck free-kick which left Agliardi petrified. The Same situation occurred a few minutes later as Marchionni replaced Camoranesi in the 72nd minute, and in the 75th minute the former Parma winger scored. It came after a good move on the right hand side which saw him dribble past Agliardi and deposit the ball in goal for the 4-0. However in the final minute, Nedved won a penalty, generously awarded by the referee, which Del Piero converted without too much problem to seal the result 5-0 in favour of the Old Lady.

Serie A Weekend Wraps:

Sampdoria 3 - 0 Reggina
Just before the international break, Sampdoria finally seemed to have found some consistency after netting two consecutive 3-0 wins against Cagliari and Empoli. However, apparently the break came at the wrong moment as two weeks later they fell to a poor 3-1 defeat away to (previously) bottom-club Livorno.Against Reggina, Sampdoria will be facing another team who until a short time ago were badly struggling. Recently though they have obtained some impressive results that have allowed them to move away from the bottom of the table.

Milan 0 – 0 Juventus

There were chances galore for both sides in this exciting game at San Siro, but ultimately no goals as Milan and Juventus were forced to settle for a goalless draw...

Atalanta 5 - 1 Napoli
Atalanta were well on course for a crushing victory after going 3-0 up at half time against a Napoli side that, to their credit, never gave up. The Neapolitans continued to press, much to their credit, despite the fact that the damage had already been done. Indeed, it was only to get worse for them as Ferreira Pinto converted Doni's through ball for a fifth not long before the end.

Cagliari 0 – 0 Livorno
Cagliari and Livorno drew a blank on Sardinia in what was a largely uneventful encounter.

Catania 3 – 1 Palermo
The Sicilian derby is seldom a calm occasion, and thus it proved once more as the goals and cards flew.It was quite the baptism of fire for Francesco Guidolin, the "new" Palermo boss who just took over for his third spell in charge of the rosanero.
Palermo were nervy in defence to start with, but eventually the visitors settled in as Catania kept the pressure up.Still, just as it seemed that the game had slowed down, Catania burst into life and deservedly opened the scoring half an hour in.The red-and-blues pressed down the wing for Vargas to swing in a cross from the left to Mascara, who slammed home to delight the partisan home support. Then, just before the interval, Catania were rewarded for their continued pressure with a second goal from the penalty spot, Spinesi converting his set piece after Barzagli shoved him in the box.Palermo came back out with a mission on their minds, and duly pressed forward largely thanks to first Brienza and Amauri. They eventually got their reward when substitute Caserta netted just after the hour mark with a fine effort from the angle out on the left.
But the hero turned villain two minutes later as he picked up a straight red for a foul on Colucci.Still, Guidolin opted to throw his men forward; on came Jankovic for a final surge, but none was forthcoming as Catania held on for the win after that excellent first half, and indeed pressed forward as Palermo tired. In fact, they were able to well and truly wrap things up right at the death with a fine drive from Martinez that left Palermo's 'keeper Fontana flailing. The look on his face as he realised what had happened well and truly summed up his side's afternoon. In Catania, meanwhile, it's party time.

Fiorentina 0 – 2 Inter

Inter were firmly in control at the Artemio Franchi as goals from Jimenez and Cruz sealed the win against a Fiorentina side that, even after attacking substitutions, found themselves pinned back.
Indeed, even when the Viola did break forward, they found Julio Cesar in inspired form. At the other end, Frey was no less impressive when faced with efforts from the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Parma 1 - 0 Empoli
Parma were well on top for the bulk of their match with Empoli, but they were left sweating towards the end as the game ended with just the one goal in it.The visitors in fact started in fine enough form, but Parma always look dangerous at home, and thus it proved when Paci beat Giacomazzi to a cross from the left and consequently fired past Balli. That put the Tuscans in a foul mood, and the only surprise leading up to the interval was that Parma could not add to their lead. Had Corradi his shooting boots on, then it might have been so different. As things stood, the Azzurri were still well in the game heading into the second half, and as such they began to press forward as the match wore on.But some last-ditch defending kept chances to a minimum, despite the threat of the likes of Busce and Pozzi, and the Ducali held on for all three points.

Roma 2 – 1 Udinese
Roma edged past Udinese in a championship six-pointed that saw the giallorossi keep the pressure up on the frontrunners.Juan opened the scoring ten minutes in as he bundled home following Giuly's blocked spot, but Quagliarelli unleashed a brilliant shot on the turn one minutes later for what can only be termed instant reply. But from then on it was almost all Roma, and the only surprise was they could find just the one goal. It came through Taddei, who started and finished a fine move 25 minutes in to leave Handanovic helpless. The visitors' misery was compounded just at the death as Pinzi saw red for dissent. Dossena joined him minutes later for largely the same offence: from then on, Roma knew that they had the win in them.

Siena 1 - 1 Lazio

Lazio had more of the chances, but were once again made to pay for an error at the back as Siena fought back for the draw. The Romans looked to be on top early on as Kolarov and Firmani dictated play, and indeed they managed a lead through Goran Pandev.
A horrendous error from Lazio 'keeper Ballotta - who rushed out but conspicuously failed to deal with the ball - and allowed Maccarone to charge in and fire into an empty net for the equaliser.Lazio had the ball in the net soon after as Makinwa buried it after a goalmouth scramble, but he was correctly ruled offside. As the first half wore on, both sides had their chances in what was an impressive end to the opening period, but there were to be no more goals.
Into the second 45 and Lazio found themselves with the bulk of the attacking possession, only for finishing to let them down. Siena, for their part, threatened to make the most of their few chances, but Ballotta had rediscovered his composure by this time.Indeed, Lazio had the best chance of the half fifteen minutes from time when Firmani's shot from Makinwa's cross left Manninger helpless, but the finish flew agonisingly wide. Thus the Biancocelesti once again dropped points, while Siena added yet another top team's feather to their cap with a battling performance.

Torino 1 – 1 Genoa

Torino and Genoa shared the spoils in a drab encounter which quite appropriately resulted in no league position changes for either side...However, the second half started with the grifoni being more determined, and in the 47th minute they took a surprise lead.Di Vaio sent the ball towards Fabiano who crossed low from the left hand side and Borriello managed to slide the ball past Sereni from right ahead of goal..This strike turned the tide in favour of Genoa, but the joy was short lived as Torino equalized 8 minutes later through Lanna.Ventola received the ball inside the penalty area, shot towards goal, only to find his effort blocked. Still, the deflected ball was picked up by Lanna, who easily scored from next to the goal line. The game ended with the home fans whistling their own players for failing to win in a game which was not too impressive or spectacular, and which left both teams 5 points above the relegation zone.

Serie A Weekend wraps

Lazio 2 – 0 Catania

The Biancocelesti went into their home game against Catania in 15th place and after having endured one of their poorest runs of form in years. The Sicilian club were five places and four points above them so they were never going to be walkovers. However, Lazio soon got a much-needed boost, as striker Tommaso Rocchi got them an early goal in the 8th minute. Substitute Goran Pandev sealed the victory for the home side with a cool finish from inside the area (89’), anticipating Polito who had rushed off his line to try and clear the danger in time.

Palermo 2 – 0 Fiorentina
Both sides come into this game in poor form so most would predict a draw here. Palermo have won just once in two months, and have lost two games on the bounce to Juventus and Catania, conceding eight goals in the process.New boss Francesco Guidolin, who replaced the sacked Stefano Colantuono, could not have had a worse debut as he was defeated in the fiery Sicilian derby.Fiorentina had gone the first 15 games in all competitions without losing a game, but they have since not won in three Serie A matches, including defeats to Udinese and Inter, and a draw with lowly Reggina.Nevertheless the Viola are still looking strong in fifth position and will be confident of pushing for a Champions League place this season.

Inter 4 – 0 Torino

Inter exemplified what was perhaps the most entertaining matchday of Serie A so far with a thumping win over Toro. The game started evenly enough, Inter perhaps shading it on number of chances, but not until a controversial penalty was awarded did they take a lead.Comotto was adjudged to have fouled Ibrahimovic in the box, and regardless of his protestations, the Swede himself had his mind on only one thing: burying the penalty. This he did, and it was 1-0 at the interval.
After that, the visitors collapsed as the nerazzurri clicked into gear. Just after half time, Chivu crossed in for Cruz to nod home, and then two minutes later Jimenez continued his sensational run of form with a rasping shot from range.Toro were looking demoralised and destroyed by this point, and it was of no surprise when Cordoba made it four with a five-yard finish after Burdisso's header across goal to seal an emphatic win.

Empoli 4 – 1 Cagliari

The Sardinians were well and truly buried by an Empoli outfit that embarked on a four-goal rout, spearheaded by co-owned AC Milan striker Nicola Pozzi.Within ten minutes he'd struck twice: first he got on the end of Agostini's clearance from Giovinco's cross to intelligently fire home, and then Pozzi showed tremendous anticipation to meet Busce's provision from a similar position.Pozzi then hit the post as the half drew to a close, with only the likes of Ferri keeping the score down for the visitors.Strangely, there were to be fewer chances in the second period, but more goals. For within five minutes of the restart, Pozzi had his hat-trick, Giovinco cutting in from the left to provide the unmarked striker with a golden chance.Agostini and Bizera looked suitably embarassed after yet another defensive error that time, but there was more to come: inevitably, it was Pozzi again. The 21 year old Pozzi this time got on the end of Marchisio's great cross from the left to head home.

Juventus 1 – 0 Atalanta

On-form Atalanta almost held Juventus to a draw, only for Pavel Nedved to launch home a late winner to keep the pressure up on Inter. After a dull first half, the hosts clicked into life in the second period as Alessandro Del Piero came on; Atalanta, meanwhile, had created little so far, but were now well and truly resigned to defending. But their efforts proved futile as, just five minutes from time, Nedved sealed all three points for the hosts with a low drive from 25 yards.

Genoa 1 – 3 Siena
Genoa found themselves crushed by an early barrage from Siena, who managed their first away win of the season in some style. The ambitious visitors were aided in their quest by some truly laughable home defending in the early stages. Mario Frick netted first after being left unmarked to bury Galloppa's cross.Ten minutes later, and with the first half not even halfway done, Loria doubled the scoreline with a close-range effort as the Genovese defence once again disgraced themselves. Then Frick made it 3-0 with another strike after Rubinho parried an earlier effort.Genoa tried to get back into it as the shock of the massive deficit wore off, and Manninger was called into action after Leon's fine long range drive. But the visitors, taking advantage of the space left by Genoa, always looked just as likely to score as half time approached. After the interval, both teams tigthened up at the back, but all-out attacking Genoa arguably had the best of the chances.Borriello in particular seemed on a one-man mission to keep things respectable, but time and again he was denied on the edge of the box.Eventually, Luciano Figueroa managed his first goal for Genoa - eighteen months after signing on from Villarreal - to end a nightmare spell of goallessness and injury. That goal could prove invaluable to him, but it really came for nought. Indeed, the visitors left with a result to savour while Genoa reflect on a terrible defensive showing.

Livorno 1 – 1 Roma
The action came early at the Armando Picchi as Livorno held capital giants Roma to a draw, making it four unbeaten games out of five for the hosts.
Things were looking up for the giallorossi as De Rossi headed home after just four minutes, Italian international 'keeper Marco Amelia completely misjudging the flight of a corner. Two minutes later, Diego Tristan spared his blushes with a tremendous solo run and shot, his effort flying in off the post. The match became a bit cagier after this; Roma held possession for lengthy spells in the first half but failed to convert, while Livorno would venture forward mainly on the counter. And while the capital club had the best of the second period, too, it will be Livorno who regard this as a point gained after holding on for a useful draw.

Napoli 1 – 0 Parma

Napoli arrived to this game seeking redemption following the humiliating 5-1 defeat suffered at Bergamo against Atalanta last weekend.
The first half proved to be a balanced affair between two well-fielded teams, but in the end an episode swayed the game in one direction rather than another. In fact, in the 18th minute Lavezzi and Blogiacino exchanged the ball well, with the latter sending a pin-pointed cross towards the middle, where Zalayeta acrobatically volleyed the ball towards goal past the helpless Bucci. This win allowed Napoli to move into 6th place in the company of Atalanta and Palermo with 21 points from 15 matches played, whereas Parma remained in 14th place with 15 points to show and just two points above the relegation zone.

Reggina – Milan
Postponed to a later date due to Milan’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Udinese 3 – 2 Sampdoria

The hosts left it late, but eventually they fought back from 2-1 down for a fine win.Udinese took the lead with a wonderful counter-attack and some somewhat slack defending from the visitors.Di Natale was put clean through by Quagliarella on a fine move on the break, the striker slotting in absolutely effortlessly to delight the home support. There was some controversy: Sammarco claimed he was fouled by barged onto the ground by Quagliarella during the build-up, but the referee saw nothing wrong. There was another moment of drama soon after: once again Di Natale was played through almost straight from Samp's kickoff, but this time a defender was able to scoop the ball out for a corner at the last minute.Di Natale and visiting 'keeper Castelazzi alike were the worse for wear after a colission, but each recovered to continue. What followed was even more surprising: Samp pulled one back, and then took the lead.First, Belluci converted a penalty after Zapotocny seemed to bring down Cassano in the box, and then, just before the interval, Grande buried from close range after yet another assist from the on-loan Real Madrid man.
What an end to an entertaining first half: Sampdoria had gone from underdogs to leaders! As the second half began, though, the Zebras showed little sign of giving up as they repeatedly tested Castelazzi. And finally the pressure paid off 20 minutes from time as Quagliarella buried a cross from Floro Flores to equalise. Then, right at the death, he found his second of the game to sneak three points from under Samp's noses.

Serie A Weekend Previews:

Atalanta 1 - 3 Palermo
Palermo roared back into lfie with a convincing win over Atalanta in Bergamo. The die was cast for the hapless hosts as early as the 13th minute, when the Sicilians netted with their first chance of the game.Cavani was able to head past Coppola from a corner to silence the home fans. After a great deal of pressure, eventually the rosanero side made it 2-0, again from a corner: is time, though, it was Langella who put through his own net. After the interval, Atalanta were no less shellshocked, and superstar Amauri made it 3-0 with a simple finish after a good team move. However, the Brazilian soon threw the done-and-dusted nature of the tie into question with a goal at the other end.Still, Palermo were still in control, and it was no surprise when they ran out the winners.

Cagliari 0 – 2 Inter

Julio Cruz’s man of the match performance allowed Inter to win three precious points in Sardinia and extend their lead at the top of Serie A to 7 points.nter arrived at this game knowing that a win would increase their lead over second placed Roma due to the latter's goalless draw earlier in the afternoon against Torino, whereas Cagliari needed points for their relegation battle. In the 57th minute the usual Cruz put the Nerazzurri ahead. The Argentinean striker received the ball from Suazo, and from the edge of the penalty area he shot a weak but deadly accurate ball past Marruocco.Nedo Sonetti decided to risk everything and he substituted Pisano with Larrivey in the 70th minute. However, this move proved fruitless as in the 79th minute Inter secured the result in their favour thanks to a goal by Suazo. With this win Inter might not have closed the Scudetto issue, but they have surely taken an important step forward towards retaining the league title as Roma now sit 7 points behind them and Juventus a further one behind the capital club.Cagliari are still in last place with Reggina and the survival zone is now 4 points away. It does not look very good for the Sardinian team and this result could also lead to the sacking of coach Sonetti.

Catania 2-0 Udinese

Catania came into this game having won just one of their last six in Serie A and they had to make do without the suspended Gionatha Spinesi and injured Takayuki Morimoto.Udinese meanwhile were flying high in fourth position after last week's thrilling 3-2 win over Sampdoria. The Zebrette were missing Raffaele De Martino and Damiano Ferronetti due to injury.
Catania who took the lead on eight minutes following a fantastic team move. Some one-touch football in the midfield led to Juan Vargas beating his man down the left and crossing in for Giuseppe Mascara to prod home at the near post.Mascara, who fired past Handanovic for his second of the game. There was a slight hint of offside about the goal but Catania did not care. The home side comfortably played out the remainder of the game, while Udinese sunk virtually without a trace, in what was probably their most disappointing performance since the 5-0 home loss to Napoli in week two.

Empoli 1 - 1 Genoa
Empoli had to share the spoils at home to their rossoblu visitors, despite having a far superior start to the game.Genoa hadn't quite looked like themselves in the first half as they were perhaps still reeling from the home reversal to Siena last week.Empoli, meanwhile, hadn't quite hit the heights of their own 4-1 thrashing of Cagliari, but they did take a lead in at the interval as Giovinco seized on a poor clearance by Masiella to beat Rubinho. The visitors improved somewhat in the second period as Sculli looked particularly dangerous, but they seemed to be en route for another defeat as the seconds ticked down.Mere minutes from time, the Genovese rescued a point with a fine finish from Masiello after he was played clean through by Figueroa. That was a hard one for the home fans to take, but without the ability to kill off a game, such things are bound to happen.

Lazio 2 – 3 Juventus

A brilliant second-half brace by Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero gave them a 3-2 away win over Lazio after an entertaining encounter at the Stadio Olimpico. In the end it was a deserved victory for Juve, who won the match thanks to two clinical finishes by their timeless captain Alessandro Del Piero. They are now momentarily second along with Roma, while Lazio are 12th with 17 points.

Milan – Livorno
Postponed to a later date due to Milan’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Parma 3 - 0 Reggina
Reggina's three-game unbeaten run came to a sorry end against Sampdoria last week, and things only got worse for the Calabrians as Parma got back to winning ways.As the visitors found themselves mainly restricted to long range efforts, Parma set about testing Novakovic during the first half. However, it took them over 25 minutes to find an opener: Gasbarroni and Reginaldo teamed up nicely to provide Corradi with a neat finishing opportunity at the far post.Parma's dominance became even more pronounced after the interval as Pisanu made it 2-0, once again after a fine ball through from Gasbarroni. The visitors collapsed, and Paci duly made it 3-0 as his header was deflected by Cherubin past Novakovic. Thus the visitors' relegation woes continue, while Parma themselves pull clear of the dropzone.

Sampdoria 2 - 2 Fiorentina

In a vastly entertaining fixture at the Luigi Ferraris, the Viola were able to earn a point away to Sampdoria.Gastaldello opened the scoring for the hosts after Lupatelli parried Cassano's free kick into his path, but the lead was fragile: just before the interval, Montolivo duly set up Mutu for an equaliser. And not long after half time, Donadel mdae it 2-1 to the visitors with a simply sumptuous low drive. However, that wasn't to last, either: Cassano looped a wonderful header over Lupatelli thanks to Maggio's deep cross.Pieri almost sealed a memorable win for Samp right at the death, but 2-2 it stayed after what was an unforgettable encounter.

Siena 1 - 1 Napoli
It was honours even at the Artemio Franchi after a largely balanced affair marked by two quickfire goals early in the second half. The first half ended goalless, but Siena had had the bulk of play; nonetheless, the best chance of the opening period belonged to Napoli's Domizzi, who hit the crossbar. However, as the second half began, it was in fact Robur that took the lead through Frick. The Liechtensteiner turned in a corner after Portanova provided him with a neat cross.Instant reply came through Bogliacino, though, after Hamsik played him through with a long ball forward.Napoli perhaps shaded the game in terms of chances, but Siena had plenty of possession and a better first half, and as such won't feel that they by any means edged a point.

Torino 0 - 0 Roma
The scoreline may suggest a bore draw, but in fact this game was anything but. There were chances at both ends, and cards aplenty, but despite some great opportunities for 'Toro', Roma will still deem it a case of two points dropped.Within ten minutes 'Toro' had picked up two bookings, and not long afterwards, the likes of Panucci and Giuly stung Sereni's gloves as Roma pressed forward early on.For all the Roma pressure, though, Barrone arguably had the best chance of the first half when he inexplicably pulled the ball wide from six yards.Di Michele, though, rivaled that miss with one of his own from an acute angle as the first period drew to a close with Torino somehow still goalless. The second half followed the same pattern in the early stages. Torino were missing chances at one end, but the likes of Mancini were eager to test the 'keeper at the other.Mancini was to have a luckless game overall, but so, too, were the likes of Vucinic for the visitors and Barrone for the hosts, both of whom spurned gilt-edged opportunities. Frustration set in, and Walter Novellino was sent to the stands for protesting the referee's decisions in quite a forceful manner; he soon had company in the form of defender Comotto, whose sending-off signalled the end of an exciting encounter.

Serie A Weekend Preview:

Fiorentina 4 – 1 Cagliari
The Viola got right back on track with a thumping win over basement boys Cagliari. It seemed to be looking good for the hosts just three minutes in as Montolivo tricked Marruocco to open the scoring. However, the Viola's recent woes came to a head only two minutes later as Fini grabbed an equaliser. But it was abundantly obvious that Fiorentina were the better side: the only surprise was that it took them so long to regain the lead. This they did 41 minutes in when Mutu headed Jorgensen's cross home, and just before half time the Romanian netted again from the penalty spot after Vieri was tugged down by Bianco.Half time did not end the goal blitz as Mutu completed his hat-trick just after the interval following Santana's cross, and then Santana himself turned goalscorer with a wonderful, quick-thinking far post finish.

Inter 2 – 1 Milan

Pirlo's early, swerving free-kick was not enough for AC Milan to gain even a share of the spoils at the San Siro, as Inter surged back to win 2-1 in front of a partisan "home" crowd. But that Milanese lead was spectacular, Pirlo taking advanatge of a controversial free-kick to provide both power and direction from 20 yards.Still, Inter can seldom be ruled out at the San Siro, and thus it proved as they immediately fought back. Eventually, Julio Cruz made it 1-1 with a truly thundering finish from close range after good work from Ibrahimovic in particular.Into the second half and Inter still looked the better side, and it wasn't too surprising when Cambiasso capitalised on a poor clearanceto stroke home a shot that rossoneri 'keeper Dida quite simply should have saved.

Juventus 2 – 0 Siena

Siena may have got better as the game went on, but it was nowhere near enough as Juventus picked up a routine three points.Salihamidzic gave the hosts a lead after half an hour of pressure, Siena proving unable to weather the early storm. In the second half, David Trezeguet was played through by Alessandro Del Piero to net a deserved second, and secure the win for the hosts.Siena did battle back into the game, but Buffon was the equal of all of their efforts. One must, however, praise the visitors for never giving up.

Livorno 1 – 1 Atalanta
Atalanta had the best of the first half, but still had to fight back after going a goal down to secure a point that, in the end, was perhaps merited. The game started rather closely, but eventually the visitors began to look the more positive side.Still, Livorno actually took the lead when Galante tapped Grandoni's header over the line a half hour in.However, Tissone equalised soon afterwards with a superb free-kick.Atalanta were well and truly alive after that, particularly as the first half ended, but as the game wore on they found themselves contained by the hosts, who kept it 1-1 in a dull second period.

Napoli 1 – 1 Torino
Ten-man Torino eventually fell to a late equaliser from a home side that must have felt that they deserved more from the game. While the first half was largely even, 'Toro's' lead could perhaps be called ill-gotten.It wasn't their fault, but rather that of referee Trefoloni, who awarded the visitors a penalty ten minutes before the interval despite the fact that Domizzi seemed to be guilty of no foul.Rosina duly converted it, but the hosts were handed a lifeline a few minutes later as Grella was sent off for a second booking. They brightened accordingly and had the best of the second period, but poor finishing and deep defending had them stumped. That was until Hamsyk made it 1-1 with a finish off the crossbar after Sosa's cross, giving Napoli the least that they deserved - a point.
Torino can't be faulted for effort, but they do have the referee to thank...

Palermo 2 – 2 Lazio
Lazio may have finished the game with nine men, but they also did so with a point, despite Palermo's initial 2-0 lead. The rosanero side, ironically enough, could have gone behind early on as Makinwa and Firmani spurned chances for the visitors, only for the in-demand Simplicio to make it 1-0 not long before the interval with a header from Miccoli's cross.Seconds after the interval, Amauri made it 2-0 with a great finish on the break, Miccoli once again being very much involved. But Lazio had already looked dangerous, and it was none too surprising when Firmani converted from close range to pull one back.Siviglia picked up a straight red for the frustrated Romans twenty minutes before the end after launching a tirade at the referee - indeed, he was arguing after conceding a penalty. As it happened, Amauri skied his effort, passing up the chance to kill the game off.Being down to ten men seemed to bury Lazio anyway, only for Tare to carry on regardless with an equaliser, scoring unmarked from De Silvestri's cross.Indeed, the visitors finished the stronger side as a shellshocked Palermo outfit rued that missed spot-kick.

Reggina 2 - 1 Catania
Vigiani's hat-trick gave Reggina an absolutely vital winner over Catania to ever so slightly ease the hosts' relegation woes.Despite the odd moment of pressure from the Sicilians, Reggina were well worth their win, even if it took Vigiani 35 minutes to open his account via a free-kick.Catania had chances through the likes of Sardo and Vargas, but Vigiani was next to strike yet again, netting fifteen minutes from time with a great drive from the edge of the area.Catania's Vargas made it 2-1 not long after Sardo had been sent off for them, but there was still time for Vigiani to seal his hat-trick with a deflected effort that left Polito flat-footed.

Udinese 2 - 2 Empoli
Ten-man Empoli managed a sensational last-gasp point at Udinese, who should have done better. The hosts took an early lead through Dossena, who was played through in absolutely wonderful fashion by Di Natale for that first goal. However, just after the interval, Udinese wree punished for not pressing their advantage when Raggi foxed Handanovic with an inch-perfect header.Pratali picked up a second booking just afterwards for the visitors, and consequently the Zebras attempted to kill the game off. They seemed to have done so five minute sfrom time when Di Natale gained a reward for a fine afternoon's work with a snapshot in the area, only for Marzoratti to steal an improbable point for Empoli with a fine header from Moro's free-kick.

Serie A Weekend Round Up`s

Atalanta 1 - 2 Roma

Roma fought back from 1-0 down to secure a positive result in Bergamo.
Ferreira Pinto took advantage of a bobbling ball in the box after a corner to fire home an early opener, but Francesco Totti was on hand in the 38th minute to power a 20-yard free-kick past the helpless Coppola.Amarantino Mancini perhaps ensured that his new contract negotiations will go smoothly with a brilliant cut-inside and shot from the left wing just before the break.

Cagliari 0 - 1 Udinese
Cagliari are in all sorts of trouble after yet again collapsing at home, this time to high-flying, but ten-man Udinese. The Friuli outfit had by far the best of the early period, but seemed to be in real trouble when Felipe picked up a second booking for an obvious foul on the half hour mark. But just two minutes later, the Sardinians showed why they're relegation material by gifting the visitors a lead. Quagliarella was able to orchestrate a fruitful counter-attack after a laughable surrender of possession in midfield.Despite their numerical advantage, the hosts actually had fewer chances than their counterparts for the remainder of the game, but neither side was able to take advantage.Larrivey, indeed, caused the most notable incident in the second period when he made it ten men per team in the last minute with a second booking.

Catania 1–1Juventus

A last-minute penalty by Alessandro Del Piero allowed Juventus to avoid defeat at Catania in a rain-soaked evening. The hosts took a surprise lead in the 15th minute with their first chance of the match, as Giuseppe Mascara sent in a precise cross from the left wing for Gionatha Spinesi, who volleyed it in brilliantly from close range. A controversial decision by the referee in the 90th minute gave Juve a lifeline. Defender Biagianti got a slight touch on Del Piero inside the area, and the referee gave the visitors a penalty, which was coolly despatched by the captain himself.
After four minutes of injury time, Catania could celebrate a bittersweet result, while Juve will be disappointed to have dropped two crucial points for their, possibly already fading, title aspirations. The Bianconeri remain 3rd with 35 points, while Catania are 9th with 22 points.

Empoli 1-1 Reggina
Empoli and Reggina battled hard under heavy downpours but after an exciting opening 10 minutes the game fizzled out as both teams share the points in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Lazio 1 - 2 Genoa
A lucky penalty gave Genoa the chance to fight back against Lazio, and this they did with an intelligent second-half display. It was tough-tackling, end-to-end stuff early on, with Lazio coming close from range at one end and Juric bringing out a great save from Ballotta at the other.Genoa had a brief period to impress after that morale-boosting chance, but Lazio took the deserved lead 22 minutes in through Stefano Mauri. The midfielder capitalised on a poor punch-clear from Rubinho - who tumbled over Borriello - to stroke home from eight yards.Another howler from the Brazilian stopper almost made it 2-0 - under no pressure, Rubinho spilled the ball after a deep free kick, only to recover as Pandev loomed large.Lazio had greatly improved after that strike, but just after the break, Milanello was awarded a penalty after falling over in the box. He was almost as surprised as the Lazio players, but celebrated nonetheless as Borriello hit his 9th of the season past Ballotta.Borriello then made it ten for the season with a free header two minutes later as Lazio fell to pieces. Goran Pandev, summing up Lazio's woes, passed up the chance to shoot seconds later, picking up a booking instead for falling over in the box. It was the correct decision, but the home fans were quite understandably still incensed by the earlier incident at the other end.The biancocelesti pressed until the last, but the Grifoni had already done enough.

Milan 5 – 2 Napoli

Two goals from Ronaldo and Pato’s first goal with Milan stole the headlines in their team’s impressive win over Napoli on Sunday evening at San Siro.
This game was labelled as Pato's match, since it marked the official debut of the Brazilian for Milan, and he did not disappoint as he proved fundamental in almost all of his team's goals. After a quarter of an hour Ronaldo opened the scoring for Milan. The second half started in style as Ronaldo headed in a Seedorf cross after just 40 seconds of play to put the Rossoneri ahead for the third time in this spectacular encounter. In the 68th minute Milan killed the game thanks to Kaka who, following a great team move, tried his luck from the edge of the area as he rocketed a shot into the bottom-left hand corner of the goal. The moment that will perhaps be best remembered in the game came once it was already over as a contest. In the 74th minute, the San Siro erupted when Pato scored his first goal after a receiving a long ball that he controlled exceptionally before slotting it in which made it 5-2.Though the final score may reflect a little harshly on the visitors, few will deny Milan this moment.

Parma 1 - 2 Fiorentina

Fiorentina edged a deserved win against Parmesan outfit that lacked the wherewithal to impress the home support for much of the game. The hosts were restricted to long-range efforts - and wayward ones at that - early on as the Viola looked to continue their early-season successes. It took them a while to do so, but Adrian Mutu managed a strike just before the interval as he headed past Bucci to crush the home support. However, Coly pulled one back not long after the restart with his own header that left Frey stranded.Fiorentina, though, had kept Bucci busy for most of the afternoon, although they did need a penalty to finally seal the deal. Mutu stepped up five minutes from time to convert the spot-kick after Vieri was brought down by Morrone.

Sampdoria 3 - 0 Palermo
Samp utterly crushed the travel-sick Sicilians to cement their top-half ambitions.
The rejuvenated Antonio Cassano set up Bellucci for the first, his strike partner duly obliging with a fine finish from an angle. As Palermo tried to fight back, the yellow cards flew, but they could only weather the storm for so long. Sammarco was Cassano's next beneficiary as he scored on the counter. The second half saw a slight decrease in pace, but it was a fitting moment when Cassano himself grabbed his side's third fifteen minutes from time with a simple finish after Campagnaro's lovely cross.

Siena 2 - 3 Inter

Despite a fisrt half scare, Inter were well in control in Tuscany as Siena succumbed to a 3-2 loss against the rampant league leaders.Zlatan Ibrahimovic took advantage of a clumsy challenge from Codrea on Cruz in the box to slot home a penalty opener, but Maccarone responded just five minutes later with a close-range header following Frick's intelligent assist. Cordoba may have steered it into the net, but the home forward claimed it nonetheless. In any case, the visitors were too strong, as shown by Cambiasso's simple finish after Ibra's assist, and the Swede's second goal just after the interval. That was the pick of the bunch - a 25 yard rocket that well and truly summed up the nerazzurri's superiority. However, Siena underlined some defensive issues about the visitors with a last-minute strike from Forestieri.

Torino 0 - 2 Livorno
Livorno's renaissance continued with a close-fought win in Turin.
The hosts actually had the best of the early period, but were left reeling when Tavano made it 0-1 midway through the first half with a great solo run that left the home defence scratching their heads.Still, Torino had done enough to suggest that they'd be able to equalise with a strike in the second period - or so they thought. Instead, right at the end of the first half, Tavano tapped in after Tristan hit the bar by way of an assist 49 minutes in.Toro did recover eventually, Bottone pulling a goal back, but it was too little, too late.
